Agapanthus orientalis PMB011
Agapanthus orientalis PMB011
Lilibet™ is a most remarkable evergreen agapanthus. It can flower at a very young age, even as tubestock in a 75mm tube. The picture on the right shows Lilibet™ in full flight as a young plant in 115mm pots ready to be sent out to a retail nursery.
Lilibet™ is a vigous clumping agapanthus capable of achieving up to 4 to 6 flowering offsets in a 140mm pot in less than a year and send up multiple flower scapes during its main flowering season of early to mid spring and then spot flower in mid summer if the environmental conditions are favourable.
It took many years to develop Lilibet™. Initial crosses over Queen Mum produced either big plants with smaller flower heads or big plants. Other approaches were necessary and early breakthroughs produced smaller plants with sparce flower heads.
We affectionately named PMN06 as Queen Mum many years before it was commercialised. The name just seemed to suit that agapanthus with its striking large bicolour blue and white flower heads. Having succeeded in achieving a smaller version it was only fitting to name it Lilibet™ which was the nickname given to HRH Queen Elizabeth as a child.
Prior to HRH the Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge visit to Australia in 2014, an invitation was extended to participate in the planting of a row of the new agapanthus Lilibet™ in front of a row of established agapanthus Queen Mum in Queens Park, Ipswich. The invitation had the support of the Council. Unfortunately it was not possible to add any further engagements at that time.
